Registration is open for the Spring 2009 Community Development Institute “We Make the Road by Walking”!

The second Toronto CDI Spring Institute (2009) is here.  We have a wide range of exciting-looking workshops this year.  But we have something new: Starting off on Thursday, we will have a panel of speakers representing the theme of this year’s Spring Institute, “We make the road by walking”, a tribute to the ideas and work of Myles Horton (founder of the Highlander Folk School), Paulo Freire (Brazilian adult educator, author of Pedagogy of the Oppressed), and Moses Coady (founder of Canadian co-operative movement and leader of the Antigonish Movement).  Our Thursday panel of speakers will address the lessons we have learned from the past and how they’re applied in the different circumstances of today.

Our guest speakers, workshops, and activities will speak to the history of our movements for social progress, the experiences of community work today, and what do we hope to achieve in the future.

Please encourage everyone you know who is active in community work, social movements, education, and related fields of learning/action to register and join us for this fascinating event and opportunity to learn, network, and build our movements.

Register today until March 29th, 2009 to take advantage of the EARLY BIRD rates!

Building on the practices of community workers, educators and social change activists – Paulo Freire and Myles Horton, the 2009 Toronto Community Development Spring Institute creates a space to explore diverse viewpoints and celebrate community development.

In a spirit of collaboration and democracy the Spring Institute will be a shared dialogue between community development workers, academics, activists, pacifists, policy makers, artists, researchers and the general community.

Throughout three days of interactive workshops, engaging plenary sessions, and collaborative working groups you will learn lessons from the past, work collaboratively in the moment, and lay the foundation to create a more equitable, and sustainable future.

The Spring 2009 Community Development Institute creates opportunities to:

  • Share and transform your experience and learning in the field
  • Unpack, analyze, and synthesize your feelings and attitudes surrounding community/organizing
  • Learn or revisit theoretical and foundational knowledge
  • Network for greater coordination and movement building
  • Have fun with others who are doing similar or complementary work
